It seems impossible to read YA paranormal romance these days without the inevitable comparisons to Twilight. But the comparisons are undeniable: the normal teen girl and the beautiful, intriguing boy who seems more than human, and is.
Samantha is a teenage girl with a crush on a boy she sees weekly at the nightclub Crave, where she hangs out. One night her visit to Crave changes her whole world, when she receives an unexpected kiss from the object of her crush. Samantha starts to experience odd changes and quickly learns she has become a “gray,” one of many beings that sucks the souls from their victims. Samantha soon becomes wrapped up with a band of angels and demons whose mission is to collectively save the world. Two of the immortals she falls in with tell her she is “special” and different from other grays. Samantha must learn what this means, while learning to control her developing powers, and determining whether her feelings for one or both of them is worth pursuing.
Dark Kiss is a departure from Michelle Rowan’s earlier paranormal romance like Angel With Attitude and the Immortality Bites series, all of which has a light and humorous chick lit vibe. This first novel in the Nightwatchers series is a little darker and edgier and has a slightly more serious protagonist. The story starts off very promising then drags a bit, but has an intriguing premise that keeps you interested.
